This topic has been trending on the internet (Google Trends) in the last couple of months, and in particular in the recent weeks. Ghost in the Shell is so whitewashed, even in Japan, the original Japanese work title (攻殻機動隊 koukaku kidoutai) is in small print and added as an under text below the English reading of the title in katakana. #SAVAGE
Some spoilers in this well written review by Emily Yoshida, where she addresses some real social issues the filmmakers overlooked.
The filmmakers think little of the emotional and intellectual connection fans already have with this property, and have put all their chips on the aesthetic. It’s exhausting to watch them curate what parts of the story’s Japanese origin are worth keeping and which can be discarded.
